Contractor insurance FAQs
What insurance do contractors need in California?
Every CSLB licensee needs a contractor's bond, and workers' compensation if they have employees. Roofing contractors must carry workers' comp even without employees. Most contracts also require general liability, commercial auto, and sometimes umbrella coverage.
Do contractors need general liability insurance in California?
CSLB doesn't require it for most license types, but LLC licensees must carry liability insurance. In practice, most general contractors, property owners, and public agencies require it before you can start a job.
What is a Bond of Qualifying Individual?
CSLB requires it when your license is qualified by a Responsible Managing Employee, or by a Responsible Managing Officer who owns less than 10% of the company. We write it along with your contractor's bond.
How fast can I get a certificate of insurance for a job?
For current clients, we can usually send certificates of insurance, including additional insured endorsements, the same business day you request them.
What do I need to get a contractor insurance quote?
Your CSLB license number and classifications, estimated payroll and revenue, the type of work you do, your current policies, and loss runs if you have them. Send what you have and we'll help with the rest.
