Trucking insurance FAQs
What insurance do I need for my trucking authority?
For-hire interstate carriers must file proof of auto liability with FMCSA, with minimum limits based on what you haul. Intrastate carriers need an insurance filing to keep a California Motor Carrier Permit active. Most brokers and shippers also require cargo coverage.
What's the difference between primary liability and non-trucking liability?
Primary liability covers you while you're operating under your own authority or under dispatch. Non-trucking liability is for leased-on owner-operators and covers you when you're driving off dispatch, when the motor carrier's policy doesn't apply.
Do freight brokers need a bond?
Yes. FMCSA requires property brokers and freight forwarders to keep financial security on file, either a BMC-84 surety bond or a BMC-85 trust fund agreement. We help with both.
Does cargo insurance cover everything I haul?
Not always. Cargo policies can exclude or limit certain commodities, like electronics or refrigerated loads. We match your cargo coverage to what you actually haul and to your brokers' requirements.
How much does truck insurance cost in California?
It depends on your radius, what you haul, your trucks, your drivers' experience and records, and your claims history. A free quote is the quickest way to know. We'll compare several carriers for you.
